Karen Cuskey-Hartman Realtor

Coldwell Banker Realty

What was your most interesting job before going into real estate?
I was a partner in an award-winning advertising and promotions agency.

Where did you grow up?
East Texas, Houston and Northern Wisconsin (I spent every summer there).

Growing up, what did you want to be?
A dentist, a physical therapist, and then finally Darrin Stephens, who was a leading character in the 70’s sitcom Bewitched — he was an advertising guy.

What do you do to relax when you’re stressed?
Meditate, work out, go for long walks or dive into helping someone else.

If you could meet any well-known figure (living or not), who would it be and why?
Carol Burnette. Always fashionable and classy while being incredibly funny and whacky. She was very well respected and broke so many barriers for women. She was also incredibly philanthropic. And she launched Cher … so there’s that too.

What do you love most about the industry?
The incredible network of people I get to work with. There’s a deep satisfaction in knowing I play a key role in helping find a place they call home, but it goes beyond that — I help people with more than just a home. I help people find jobs, adopt pets, volunteer for charities, organize events, connect with reliable home vendors, and so much more. It’s all about fostering a network and embracing the joy of giving without expecting anything in return.

How do you distinguish yourself from the crowd of agents?
I start with giving and never expect anything in return.

What is the most difficult aspect of your job?
Stopping. I love it so much that it’s hard not to let it consume me and my private time.

What’s your best advice for generating new leads?
Get involved to help others. The rest will come naturally.

What are you binge-watching/reading/listening to lately?
“Mad Men” – I’m re-watching it and am in love with Don Draper! “Landman” – Billy Bob Thornton is GOLD! And “Ninja Selling” – great book, great group and great podcast series.

What’s your favorite meal in Dallas-Fort Worth?
The Spaghetti at Terilli’s on Greenville

Architecturally speaking, what is your favorite building in Dallas-Fort Worth?
The Perot is beautiful on the inside and outside, but the Bank of America Building is the tallest in the city and always has thematic lighting supporting whatever is going on in the city.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to you on the job?
I showed a house where someone was murdered and the outline of the body (in blood) was still on the floor.

What’s one thing people are surprised to learn about you?
That I’m an only child.

What is your favorite vacation spot and why?
Sailing in the British Virgin Islands — white sand, blue water and the nicest people. Plus, when you are captaining your own boat, if you don’t like the vibe, you pull anchor and sail away with all your stuff in tow.

What is your favorite city after Dallas-Fort Worth?
Barcelona, Spain

In 10 words or less, what is your advice for someone new to the industry?
Give selflessly, schedule diligently, network strategically and set realistic goals.

What’s your favorite real estate iPhone/Android app?
Canva. I live in it!

Who are your favorite people to follow on social media?
Tom Ferry, Glenda Baker, Chefzhelm, Courtney Benson, Paige Steckling
