Zillow: Buyers want exposed beams and arched doorways

by Emily Marek

Exposed brick can boost a listing’s online engagement by 14.9%, according to the Zillow Buzz Index report from Zillow.

Exposed wood beams can boost a listing’s online engagement by 20%, according to the Zillow Buzz Index report from Zillow.

Among over 600 home features and design aspects, exposed beams were the most popular — home listings featuring the element saw 19.7% more engagement on Zillow.com.

Similarly, listings with exposed brick saw a 14.9% boost. Other popular features include open shelving (14.7%) and arched doorways (14.4%).

“Today’s shoppers are craving homes with personality,” said Zillow home trends expert Amanda Pendleton. “Charming details like exposed beams, original brick and vintage architectural elements tell a story and create an emotional connection the moment a shopper sees the listing. In a sea of cookie-cutter properties, that character helps a home stand out and drives more clicks, saves and, ultimately, stronger buyer interest on Zillow.”

Victorian and mid-century rule

Home shoppers are craving several specific architectural styles. Victorian homes saw a 19.3% boost in site traffic, making the style the second-most popular feature in Zillow’s report. Similarly, vintage homes and touches boost listings by 14.3%.

Tudor homes, meanwhile, receive a 13.7% boost, mid-century homes get a 12.8% boost, and Cape Cods get an 11.1% boost.

Furthermore, A-frames get a 12.7% boost, while bungalows get an 11.4% boost. On the more rustic end, log cabins get an 11.6% boost.

Unique, must-have features

Buyers also want homes with unique features that set them apart from typical houses. Among the most popular are treehouses, which boost buyer engagement by 14.6%, as well as saltwater pools (11.4%) and outdoor showers (10.5%).
