Roughly 2.8 million millennials moved across state lines in 2022 — and a huge chunk of them moved into Texas, according to a report from StorageCafe.

The Lone Star State gained over 171,000 new residents in 2022, the second-highest proportion of new residents in the country behind Florida. However, Texas emerged as the No. 1 state for incoming millennials — that is, adults aged 24 to 39.

Approximately 75,000 millennials made Texas their home in 2022. That’s more than double the next highest state for millennial in-migration, Georgia, which brought in a surplus of 36,000 millennials that year. Furthermore, more than half of these new Texans hailed from California.

So, why are young people flocking to Texas? In the case of the California-to-Texas migration, home prices have a lot to do with it. Houses are about 62% cheaper in Texas than in California — that amounts to about $440,000. Likewise, New Yorkers who move to Texas save about $127,000 on homebuying, while Floridians save about $76,000. Add in the state’s low cost of living and vibrant culture, and the Texas millennial migration is no mystery.
